Hulu Plus

Hulu Plus was just announced by Hulu.  You will soon be getting Hulu on more places than your computer.  Expect it for iPhone, iPad (WiFi or 3G!), Samsung TV’s and Blu-ray players, Sony TV’s and Blu-ray players, Vizio TV’s and Blu-ray players, PS3, and Xbox 360. For 9.99 per month you can watch entire current seasons of TV shows already found on Hulu and with support on iPhone and iPad you can view that content anywhere you are.

Hulu is also giving you access to the back catalogue of older shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Arrested Development.

I’m going to be honest, I was excited for all this before I started writing this post. Netflix already gives me access to a very extensive back catalogue of TV and my DVR can keep me up to date on television this season.  The question it now poses is this, can I drop TV completely now that Hulu Plus Exists.  Having a PS3 in the living room streaming Hulu and Netflix may allow me to drop cable.  Stay tuned…

minimalmac:

I had a request in the submissions to recommend some Minimal Word processors. As someone who considers himself a writer, I certainly have a weakness for trying out just about every such program that comes along. Therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to round up the few I have covered here.

That said, I want to start out with one that, in the course of doing this post, I discovered I had not featured before…

Mariner Write – Not quite sure how I missed not mentioning this one here before. Especially because I have used it for years (I think well over 10, and likely closer to 15). Perhaps it is because most of those in the company that develop it are really close friends of mine and I was afraid I could not be partial.

No matter, it deserves attention because it’s a really excellent word processor with a ton of features (Hello. Deep Applescript support!) and none of the bloat of the other full featured ones out there. It’s fast, flexible, has easy to manage style support, and can save out and open a ton of formats. Plus, you have to give a certain amount of respect to a program that has been around doing its thing for as long as it has. Also, have I mentioned it is made with care by some of the loveliest humans to ever grace my meager life?

Seriously, check it out.

And in the covered it here before department…

Bean – Bean is a rich text editor who’s aim is to provide a bit more functionality than TextEdit and decidedly less that Microsoft Word. Also, be sure to check out the story of how it came into being.

Pagehand – Made with typography nerds and a nod towards elegance in mind. Meant to provide advanced styling controls yet still not get in your way.

Text Edit – Of course, I would be not be doing my Minimal Mac duty if I did not point out, for the eleventeenth time, what a simple yet capable word processor you have built right into your Mac. Go ahead, click the link to my earliest post, look at the list I made there, and see if there is not at least one “Holy crap, I didn’t know it did that!” moments.

At my bar: Espresso in the morning, wine in the evening and iPad whenever.

Nice. My friends keep on making this a reblog kind of day.

Taking 5: Apple Sues HTC… er… Google

nerdology:

I spoke to an Apple employee yesterday (who chooses to remain nameless) about the going’s on at Apple and the reason for the seemingly sudden lawsuit against cell phone manufacturer HTC.  It has become obvious, from the 20 patent infringements Apple is claiming, that HTC isn’t really the target here.  The target is Google.

Apple is really after Android the mobile operating system built by Google… HTC just happens to be caught in the middle of this fight between two titans of electronic industry.  Apple knows they can’t go after Google directly because Android is free but they can go after the hardware manufacturers (in this case HTC).  If HTC and the other hardware manufacturers are getting sued (and more importantly losing law suits to Apple over items that are in Android) Google will be forced to modify the OS so it is compliant without infringing on Apple’s patents.  If they don’t the hardware manufactures will get their software elsewhere.

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it.  We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” - Steve Jobs

You can hear the passion coming from Steve.  It is clear Apple is afraid of a repeat occurrence of what happened in the 80s with their personal computer operating system.  The Apple graphical user interface changed the game for home computing but it was Microsoft that came away with the accolades (and the money).  Now 20+ years later Apple has changed the game in the smart phone market only to see their biggest competitor, Google, ‘stealing’ much of its interface from the iPhone OS.

On the surface it sounds a little childish.  Apple is angry that Google is making an OS that is similar to their own, but they can’t sue Google.  So they go after HTC in hopes that they win and HTC puts pressure on Google.  But really Apple is defending itself… in a weird way.  They got burned hard once and almost went under and Apple is probably scared that it is about to happen again.  Steve Jobs doesn’t want to lose Apple again so he will fight for his OS.

But what about the part where this lawsuit is absolutely terrifying for consumers? Great question. I was just getting to that.

Life’s Good

Up there in the immensity of the Cosmos, an inescapable perception awaits us. National boundaries are not evident when we view the Earth from space. Fanatical ethnic, religious or national chauvinisms are a little difficult to maintain when we see our planet as a fragile blue crescent fading to become an inconspicuous point of light against the bastion and citadel of the stars.

– Carl Sagan (via seandanaher) (via itsfullofstars) Via It's Full of Stars

20 So you may walk in the way of goodness, And keep to the paths of righteousness.

– NKJV Proverbs 2:20

Life

Life is what you make it. After today, I really realized that. I spent all if my tine today working with boy and cub scouts. First an Eagle COH, followed by a cub awards ceremony. I had a great time. Just talking with some of the scouts, made me realize how fortunate I am. The simple stuff. Talking about the cubs, laughing with the kids. Lighting some candles for a ceremony. Watching as some of the scouts crossed over. That especially. Seeing and watching the mad rush for dessert. Then watching the kids become spell bound by a storyteller. Watching the kids parents relax for the first time that day. That is why we were put on this planet. To tell stories, with loud sound effects. Life is really what you make if it. Thank you to all of my scout leaders, my fellow den chiefs and cub scouts. I hope that all Scouts can someday realize what I did today.
